|Incident Details:||Police Officer Harry Fielder was assigned to the Canalport Station.
On April 14, 1931, Officer Fielder was struck by an ambulance near 22nd Street and Damen Avenue. The ambulance was rushing injured firefighters to St. Anthony’s Hospital after they were injured in a sewer tunnel fire. Several firefighters died and approximately 40 were injured when they became trapped while attempting to rescue streets and sanitation workers stuck 35 feet below the surface of 22nd and Laflin Streets.
Officer Fielder’s funeral mass was held at Resurrection Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Josephine; and his daughters, Margaret and Marion.
