|Incident Details:||Police Officer James Cooley, 52, was assigned to the Cottage Grove Station.
On January 23, 1927, Officer Cooley witnessed Thomas Pemberton robbing Paul Anderson and James Kotrich in the 2900 block of South Prairie Avenue. Officer Cooley attempted to help the victims when Pemberton shot him. Anderson and Kotrich put the officer in a car and attempted to drive him to the hospital when they collided with another vehicle. The officer was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital. Officer Cooley succumbed to his injuries on April 4.
Thomas Pemberton was acquitted of all charges.
Officer Cooley was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and six children.
