|Incident Details:||Police Officer James Scannell, 47, was assigned to the 018 District.
On July 2, 1972, Officer Scannell along with two other officers responded to a call regarding a drunk and disorderly customer at a bar on the 900 block of North Rush Street. As the officers attempted to put the man under arrest, he resisted. A struggle ensued and Officer Scannell suffered a heart attack and collapsed. The two officers at the scene performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the officer, but were unable to save him. Office Scannell was pronounced dead upon arrival to a local hospital.
Officer Scannell’s funeral service was held at St. Veronica Church and he was laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; children, Kathleen, Jerry, James, Margaret, Maureen, Mary, Kevin, Karen, and Marlin; siblings, Mary, Margaret, Eamon, Jeremiah (CPD).
