Police Officer James Williams, 45, was assigned to the Cottage Grove Station.
On July 16, 1924, Officer Williams interrupted a robbery-in-progress occurring at a residence in the 2800 block of South Wabash Avenue. When the robbers – Walter Harris, Nathan Pauletto, Clarence Mitchell, and Charles Holis – saw the officer, they immediately opened fire. Officer Williams was shot six times. The officer returned fire and struck, Nathan Pauletto. Officer Williams was rushed to Michael Reese Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Walter Harris, Nathan Pauletto, Clarence Mitchell, and Charles Holis were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Williams was laid to rest in Kansas City, Missouri.
