|Incident Details:||Detective Jeremiah Lucey, 60, was a 30-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Shakespeare Avenue Station.
On February 6, 1954, Detective Jeremiah Lucey and his partner, Officer Roman Steinke, went to a laundry shop on the 2700 block of Diversey Avenue to serve an arrest warrant to Sam Lee. Lee was wanted after he slapped an 11-year-old boy and the child alerted his father. When the detectives arrived to the shop and attempted to arrest Lee, he shot and fatally wounded them. Lee was shot by officers who responded to the scene; he later died. Officer Steinke died on February 13 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Detective Lucey died on February 7 at Alexian Brothers Hospital.
Detective Lucey was laid to rest in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and two children.
