Police Officer John “Honest John” Schuetz, 56, was a 23-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 33rd Precinct.
On January 27, 1919, Officer Schuetz was fatally wounded outside of his duplex in the 1300 block of West Hollywood Avenue. Officer Schuetz’s wife heard her husband confront a man, and then, she heard two gunshots. The officer was found bleeding on the outside stairway leading to their basement. Officer Schuetz was transported to Lake View Hospital where he died an hour later.
The assailant(s) were never apprehended.
Officer Schuetz was laid to rest in St. Boniface Church. He was survived by his wife and daughter, Clara.
