|Incident Details:||Police Officer John Sevick, 20, was assigned to the Rogers Park Station.
On July 24, 1933, Officer Sevick was in the Criminal Court Building at 54 West Hubbard Street. Two men, John Scheck and Carl Grundhoefer, attempted to escape as an officer prepared them for transfer from the court house back to the jail. Officer Sevick attempted to stop them from exiting when Scheck opened fire with a gun his sister, Rose Scheck, had smuggled into the courthouse. Officer Sevick was shot near the heart and died at the scene.
Charges against Carl Grundhoefer and Rose Scheck were dropped. John Scheck was sentenced to death, but his sentenced was later reprieved.
Officer Sevick’s funeral mass was held at St. Jerome’s Church and he was laid to rest in Forest Home Cemetery. He was survived by his pregnant wife and parents.
