|Incident Details:||Police Officer Joseph Piganowski, 29, was assigned to the 19th Precinct.
On November 18, 1920, Officer Pijanowski was assigned to protect former Alderman William Held. Three men — Raymond Knight, Albert Willer, and Henry Schmidt— were hiding underneath a porch, ambushed the pair and shot them. Officer Pijanowski and the alderman were transported to St. Anthony Hospital. Alderman Held survived the incident. Tragically, Officer Piganowksi succumbed to his injuries.
Raymond Knight, the shooter, and Albert Willer were found guilty of the murder and sentenced to life in prison. Henry Schmidt was acquitted of all charges.
Officer Pijanowski was laid to rest in St. Adalbert Cemetery.
