Police Officer Joseph Tiernan, 42, was assigned to the Warren Avenue Station.
On August 23, 1917, Officer Tiernan saw two armed robbers breaking into the West End Dry Goods Store in the 1700 block of West Madison Street. While the officer attempted to place the men under arrest, Harry Lindrum drew a weapon and fatally shot him. Harry Lindrum and his partner, Harry Sutherland, fled the scene and were later apprehended. Officer Tiernan succumbed to his injuries the next day, August 24.
Harry Lindrum, 22, was found guilty of murder and hanged at Cook County Jail on December 14, 1917. Harry Sutherland was sentenced to serve 25 years in prison.
Officer Tiernan’s funeral mass was held at St. Catherine of Siena Church and he was laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery. He was survived by his wife.
