Police Officer Robert H. Perkins, 45, was a Vietnam veteran and a 16-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 003 District. On March 7, 1992, Officer Perkins observed an individual matching the description of a wanted burglary offender near 61st Street and Wabash Avenue. As he attempted to interview the suspect, Stanley Davis, the offender pulled a handgun and shot the officer, striking him twice. Davis then threw the gun on the ground and fled. Officer Perkins was rushed to Cook County Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:00 PM. Police were able to identify Davis, a parolee, through fingerprints lifted from the recovered weapon. He was apprehended eight days later hiding in a residence in the suburb of Harvey. Davis was charged with first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Officer Perkins’ funeral mass was held at Emmanuel Baptist Church and he was laid to rest in Cedar Park Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mattie; three daughters, Renee, Ramona, and Tiffany Walker; three brothers; and a sister.
