|Incident Details:||Police Officer Roy Costello, 44, was a 21-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Motorcycle Division.
On October 25, 1945, Officer Costello was fatally injured in the line of duty while riding his police motorcycle near the intersection of Archer and Ashland Avenues. Officer Costello struck the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead of him after the driver abruptly stopped for a changing traffic signal.
Officer Costello’s funeral mass was held at St. John the Baptist Church and he was laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Pearl; his children, Eleanor, Robert, Sgt. Francis, U.S.A., William U.S.N., and his grandson, Sgt. Thomas Costello (CPD).
