Incident Details: Police Officer William Stringfellow, 52, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Maxwell Street Station

On October 3, 1935, Officer Stringfellow was escorting John Beahan, an employee of the Fred Harvey Restaurant located in Union Station to a nearby bank. Beahan was carrying approximately $5,300 in a satchel when they were ambushed in a daylight armed robbery by two men. Both offenders opened fire on the officer, shooting him twice. Beahan was not hurt in the incident. Officer Stringfellow succumbed to his injuries.

John Bucur, 33, and Benjamin Patilski, 24, were arrested in connection to Officer Stringfellow’s murder.

Officer Stringfellow’s funeral mass Edison Park Lutheran Church and he was laid to rest in Acacia Park Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth and son, Raymond.
